Setting up Kwilt
Kwilt supports FAT32, exFAT, NTFS, HFS+, EXT3 or EXT4 hard drive file system formats.
If you keep the same network SSID and passwords, once you boot your new router your Kwilt device will automatically connect to it and be ready to use as usual. If you change your network SSID and/or password, you simply need to run the “Setup New Kwilt Device” process again from your Kwilt app. Your Kwilt will keep its name and password, and connect to your new network. Kwilt will not need to re-index the content stored on the USB storage plugged into it.
If you swap hard drives you will no longer be able to see or access the content of the drive you disconnect, and will now be able to access everything stored on the new drive. In addition, the new drive will become the new transfer destination for your offloads.
Once your Kwilt device has been turned on (for the Shoebox Mini, a green light should appear underneath device. For the Shoebox Plus model, a red light will appear on the side of the device. For the Kwilt2 and Kwilt3, a blue light will appear on the side of the device), allow 5 minutes to pass before attempting to connect your device to your Wi-Fi.
If your device still cannot be located at this step, go to your mobile Wi-Fi settings and look for an unsecured network (no password required) called “Kwilt Shoebox” or “Kwilt”. If you see this network, connect to it and return to the Kwilt app. Your setup will resume and you can follow the on-screen instructions.
During setup you will be asked to select the Wi-Fi network that you wish to connect your Kwilt to. Once you have selected the desired network and have entered its password, Kwilt will connect and your mobile will switch back to that network. You will then be prompted to name your Kwilt device and assign a password to it. The password is a security convenience that allows you to protect your content on your network and ensure that nobody can access it at home or remotely without your consent.
- Check to make sure your Kwilt device is properly powered. For the Kwilt Shoebox Mini, check through the open slit at the bottom to ensure there is a green light on. If you are using the Kwilt Shoebox Plus, check for a red light on the corner of your device. If you are using Kwilt2 or Kwilt3, there will be a blue light on the outside of your device. If your device has no light, this means that it is not properly powered. Connect it to a working power outlet and try again.
- Stay within a few feet from your Kwilt device with your phone/tablet to get the best wireless signal.
- Make sure you have waited at least 5 minutes before attempting to perform the setup. This will allow enough time for the device to boot up.
Kwilt Shoebox Mini and Kwilt2 only support 2.4GHz networks (802.11a, b, g and n), which means 5GHz networks will not be visible or accessible by your Kwilt device.
No, Kwilt cannot format your drives or keys, and cannot erase files on your drives for security reasons. That way you cannot accidentally delete files or wipe out an entire drive from the Kwilt app. Kwilt only reads and writes to drives that are formatted using FAT32, exFAT, NTFS, HFS+, EXT3 or EXT4 file systems.
No, if your drive has been formatted into any formats Kwilt supports, you will not need to format it and Kwilt will be able to read and write to your USB storage device. Therefore you can disconnect your USB storage devices from the Kwilt device to copy content directly from another PC and connect it back to your Kwilt with no issue.
You can also easily use existing USB drives that have content already stored on them and connect them to Kwilt to make the content that was sleeping in drawers available and accessible again!
We don’t recommend connecting your Apple Time Machine backup drive to your Kwilt device for the following reasons: 1) Your Apple Time Machine backup is formatted in a proprietary format and Kwilt cannot read its content, and 2) you will no longer be able to back up your Mac to your Time Machine backup drive when it is connected to Kwilt.
We recommend having a dedicated drive for your Time Machine backup directly connected to your Mac, and another one dedicated to Kwilt so that you can store and access all your photos from anywhere.
You can, however this option is only available for the Kwilt Shoebox Plus, Kwilt2 and Kwilt3 as an ethernet cable is included. The setup is very simple; plug in the ethernet cable to your home router and connect the Kwilt device. Follow steps to setup the device on the Kwilt application.
Yes, for maximum privacy you can dedicate a Kwilt device to each family member at home under the same network rather than sharing one device and content between everyone.
Yes. For example, you can connect your account to your personal Kwilt and to your family’s Kwilt. When transferring mobile photos and videos, you can choose which device you want your files transferred to. You can access both Kwilt devices simultaneously or even toggle off one or the other. The Kwilt platform is very flexible so you can enjoy the content stored on your Kwilt the way you want!
Absolutely. The Kwilt platform aggregates & virtualizes your content stored at home (through a Kwilt device or Kwilt-enabled router), cloud storage and social media. Therefore you can dedicate a Kwilt device to your files at the office and your personal files at home and always have access to your stored content, even if they aren’t on the same network.
Absolutely! If you are using Kwilt Shoebox Mini, you can use a standard USB port replicator sold at any computing store to connect multiple USB drives and keys to your Kwilt. If you’re using a Kwilt Shoebox Plus, Kwilt2 or Kwilt3, there is already four USB connectors that allow connection to multiple drives without the need for an adapter.
The Kwilt device will index a drive and present its content to the Kwilt app for access anytime, anywhere. When several USB storage devices are connected to one Kwilt device, you will see their individual names along with the percentage of storage used for each under the “Manage Kwilt Device” option. You can access this by tapping on the Kwilt icon at the top left corner of the Kwilt app.
Transferring to Kwilt
One of the primary focuses of Kwilt is to free up space on your phone, therefore it would defeat the purpose if the application took up the same amount of space. Your files are not actually stored on the phone at all, so that all your mobile space stays free.
Here is how we do it; the drive or USB that is connected to your device holds all your photos and videos. This drive constantly stays online so that if you wish to pull up your files they are viewable on your phone without having to actually be stored on your phone. The only storage that the Kwilt app takes on your phone is the small thumbnail files of your photos and videos.
There are many factors that may affect the transfer performance on your home network.
You may have many devices requesting bandwidth at the same time, limiting your router transfer rate to any individual client. Movie streaming for example; takes a lot of bandwidth and may affect your router Wi-Fi throughput. Typically, reducing the number of concurrent transfers, obstacles and noise between your router and Wi-Fi client devices is the best way to improve transfer speed.
You can also move your Kwilt device closer to your router as the closer the devices are to each other, the stronger the wireless signal will be. If you are looking for a more powerful option you can try the new Kwilt2 or Kwilt3, which has a faster transfer rate.
This message indicates that the device does not recognize the USB or drive connected to your Kwilt. This is a crucial part of the setup, as the drive you plug into Kwilt is where all your photos and videos will be stored. If you have already connected a drive into Kwilt and are seeing this error, double check that the USB port is plugged in all the way and then disconnect and reconnect your drive.
When you transfer photos and videos to Kwilt and then decide to delete them from your mobile, they will only be deleted once Kwilt has confirmed that they have been successfully transferred to the connected hard drive.
If you do not see your transferred photos in the Kwilt app, double check that your mobile has internet access either through Wi-Fi or a 3G/LTE data connection. If your mobile is disconnected from the internet, the Kwilt app will not be able to request your photos. Once you restore internet connection for your mobile, your Kwilt photos will appear again.
If you are currently using iCloud and wish to have your iCloud files transferred to your Kwilt, it must be enabled in your Copy Settings. Tap the Kwilt icon in the top left corner of the app and in the dropdown menu, tap “Set Copy Preferences”. Turn on “Enable the Transfer of iCloud Photos & Videos to Kwilt”. Once this is active you will be able to transfer your iCloud files.
Where are my photos & videos stored when I offload to a Kwilt device that has several USB storage devices plugged into it?
If you have several USB storage devices connected to your Kwilt, when you use the “Copy to Kwilt” feature, you will be prompted to select which drive or USB key you want your mobile photos & videos to be transferred to.
Yes, when Kwilt prompts you to do so, this means that your photos & videos are now on the USB storage device connected to your Kwilt device. The Kwilt app always will verify that your files have transferred before asking you if you wish to confirm local deletion from your mobile. In addition, on iPhone and iPad, when you delete photos and videos, you have a certain number of days to restore them from the “Recently Deleted” folder in Apple Photos on your phone if you want them physically back on your phone.
How long will it take to transfer the hundreds or thousands of photos & videos I have on my mobile?
If you have a lot of media on your mobile, the initial photo & video transfer may take a while. This time varies based on the quantity and resolution of your files. For a few hundred photos, it can take 10 minutes, and for thousands of high quality photos & videos, it can take up to a few hours. We recommend connecting your mobile to a power source until your first initial file transfer is complete.
As of now, for the transfer to be complete you must remain on the app while transferring. However, if you need to leave the app, the transfer will pause until you return.
Absolutely! Kwilt can store any file types you need to access on the go. Simply go to your computer, transfer your files through your home network to the Kwilt device, or copy them to the USB storage from your PC and plug the USB storage back to the device if you have a large number of files. Then in the Kwilt mobile app, tap the Kwilt icon at the top left corner and select “Browse Kwilt Filesystem” to access these files from anywhere.
Yes, you can transfer file types other than photos & videos to Kwilt. You can do this through your home network, personal computer or by disconnecting the USB key or drive plugged into your device, connecting it to your PC, and then copying the files and connecting it back to Kwilt.
Yes! This new feature has been added onto our Plus model, as well as our Kwilt2 and Kwilt3.
For Kwilt Shoebox Plus, an SD card reader is included, which allows you to plug any SD card into the USB connector. Once plugged in, you can copy all files or selected files from your SD card onto the Kwilt Shoebox Plus. If you wish to delete the contents from your SD card after the transfer, the app will automatically ask if you wish to do this after the transfer is successful.
Our new Kwilt2 and Kwilt3 devices have an SD card reader built into the device, so there is no need for the SD card adapter.
Yes. Apple recently released a new photo and video compression format that is called HEIC. On iOS 11 and for iPhones 6, 6s, 7, 8 and X, Apple turns on HEIC for photo capture by default. The Kwilt app can read and transfer HEIC photos and videos that are stored locally on your iPhone or iPad. Once transferred, Kwilt can read them on your iOS and Android device.
What should I do if the Kwilt app cannot see the external drive or memory key connected to my Kwilt ?
1. Make sure you have properly connected a USB memory key or external drive and that it is powered up. USB keys and slim portable drives are usually powered directly by the Kwilt device, but if your external drive requires to be powered by an external power adaptor, make sure it is connected to an electrical source with the power adaptor supplied by your hard drive vendor.
2. Check that your hard drive or memory key is readable from your computer. Once you can confirm it is readable from your computer, plug it back to the USB cable of your Kwilt and it should be recognized and accessible.
If your internet happens to go down you will not be able to access your Kwilt device from your phone, but you can still access it from your PC/Mac via Samba, providing your local network is operational. If your home network is disconnected from the Internet you will not be able to access your Kwilt content from your mobile when you are outside of home, since your home network is in a state where it has no connection to the outside world. You may use your cellular data in order to access the app but keep in mind this may charge more money to your phone bill depending what data plan you have.
Kwilt will simply index the content available on the drive and will then write to it whenever you offload new photos & videos from your mobile. This way you can access it via the Kwilt app and through your PC on your LAN.
What can I do if the Kwilt Application sees my external drive or memory key but no content is available?
Depending on the amount of data your USB storage device contains, it may take up to several minutes for Kwilt to index it entirely.
1. Go to “Manage Kwilt Devices” and confirm that the USB drive is showing under your Kwilt Device.
2. Go to “Browse Kwilt Device Filesystem” and confirm that you can navigate through your folders on the USB drive.
3. Tap the Sources filter located at the bottom of the Kwilt app and choose the Cloud icon. This will show you the status of your Kwilt device source.
Simply access your Kwilt device from your personal computer (Windows or Mac) through your home network and through the computer’s native file system, you can move, add or delete files on your Kwilt’s connected storage devices.
To format your drives, simply unplug your USB drive from the Kwilt device, plug it into your personal computer and use the USB drive and key formatting tools of your computer. If you intend to connect the newly formatted drive back to the Kwilt, make sure to format it into a file system that is supported by Kwilt devices. Supported file systems are: FAT32, exFAT, NTFS, HFS+, EXT3 and EXT4.
Kwilt is a network share, which means you can connect to your Kwilt on your home networks with your Windows and Mac computers. For access, use your Kwilt user account email as your user ID and the password you gave to the device during setup. You can then securely drag and drop content to and from your device.
Yes, you can share your Kwilt device with others. To give access, make sure they are connected to the Wi-Fi network to which the device is connected. When they are connected to your home network, they simply need to run the Kwilt app, go to “Settings > Media Sources”, tap the “+” icon, select “Kwilt Device or compatible router” then tap “Add an existing Kwilt Device”. Your Kwilt will pop up and your guest will be asked to enter the password you created during initial setup. After the initial setup, all of the content stored on your Kwilt will be accessible to that person and you can both offload your phone/tablet files to your Kwilt device.
To ensure Kwilt is suited for everyone, any device that the Kwilt Application can be downloaded on will pair to the Kwilt device. For example, devices like iPads, iPods, or tablets will connect to Kwilt as well.
Yes, you can connect your Kwilt to your desktop PC/Mac through your home network. The Kwilt device is a network device that connects to other computing devices through your home network. The only physical connection is between your USB key or external drive via the USB port, and the Kwilt device.
Yes! We have created Kwilt Add-Ins for Microsoft Office 365 and Microsoft Outlook. In your Microsoft Office 365 and Microsoft Outlook apps, you can access the Kwilt Add-Ins to access and use your photos in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Outlook on the many platforms supported by MS Office 365.
Currently this solution is not available, however PC/Mac access to Kwilt content from outside of home networks will be offered in the future. In the meantime, the Kwilt Portal provides access to your Kwilt device photos from anywhere through the web on any personal computer. Go to ww4.mykwilt.com and log in. From there you can find your photos through the Kwilt filters and drag and drop them to your PC’s desktop.
Yes, this is typically the case for family shared Kwilt devices! Everyone in the family can offload and access their family photos & videos from anywhere and all enjoy the same memories!
Although there is a power adaptor provided with your Kwilt device, you can also use any micro USB power adaptor with the following output specifications: 5V, minimum 2AMP and maximum 2.5 AMP. If you are using the Kwilt Shoebox Plus, we recommend using the power supply included with your device as the Plus model requires more power than a normal micro USB power supply. Kwilt2 and Kwilt3 use a generic round power supply, which is provided with the Kwilt device.
The HDMI port on your Kwilt device allows you to send any photo & video accessible by your Kwilt account to a TV. By connecting the Kwilt device directly into a TVs HDMI input, you can display the photos & videos stored on your Kwilt device(s), mobile, cloud storage and social media accounts directly onto your TV. Control it all from your mobile through the Kwilt app acting as your remote control.
Better yet, you can display any photo & video content in your Kwilt app to any Kwilt device associated with your Kwilt account. This means that if your parents living in San Francisco have a Kwilt device associated with your Kwilt account, they can connect their device to the TV at home and you’ll be able to display any of your photos & videos on it remotely from anywhere else in the world.

If your Kwilt requires repairs, maintenance or service, contact the dealer from whom you originally purchased the product, or contact Kwilt support at ww4.mykwilt.com/support. If it is determined that your Kwilt is defective, and if all proofs of purchasing within the one year limited warranty are made available to Kwilt Inc. or the dealer through which you have made your purchase, an RMA number will be issued. Once an RMA number has been issued, you will need to return the product in proper packaging and insured at your expense to the address provided along with the RMA authorization. Kwilt Inc. shall have no liability whatsoever for lost data regardless on the cause, recovery of lost data or data contained in any third party product connected to Kwilt®. Repaired or replaced units will be shipped back to you at your expense.

In order to safely disconnect the USB drive, tap on the Kwilt icon, go to “Manage Kwilt Devices” and tap on the USB drive that shows. A dialog will appear allowing you to safely disconnect the USB drive. This method is always recommended to prevent possible data loss.
Kwilt-enabled routers can serve your photos and videos through your Kwilt account to mobile apps on your smartphone, the ww4.mykwilt.com portal and Office365 add-ins. You can, however the content that is stored on the USB key will not be accessible from Kwilt once it is disconnected. Please use the Kwilt mobile app to safely disconnect your USB key or drive by going to “Manage Kwilt Devices” and tapping on “Eject” listed beside the drive.
If you disconnect your Kwilt device from the electrical outlet, it will no longer be powered and will not work as intended. However, this will not affect its settings and should not affect the content already stored on the attached USB storage device. When you plug back the Kwilt in an electrical outlet, it will re-connect to the network and make its connected content available to your Kwilt app on your mobile within a couple of minutes.
No, you cannot. The USB connector of the Kwilt device is meant to host an external drive or a USB key. This drive always stays connected to Kwilt, so you can transfer your files from your iPhone wirelessly to that drive or key.
Once your mobile files are transferred to Kwilt, you can delete them from your iPhone and still access them from anywhere with the Kwilt app.
Yes, you should ALWAYS make sure you keep a second copy of your content; either by copying your Kwilt device content via your home network to another drive on your PC or by connecting the Kwilt connected drive to your PC and copying its content to a PC or a second drive. USB drives are electronic devices and are subject to failure. If for any reason the USB drive that holds your content malfunctions, having a second copy ensures that you still have access to a copy of your content.
Kwilt does not store any of your photos in the cloud. Instead, Kwilt indexes your content and the pointers to its location so that your app will know where your photos and videos are when you decide to access them. When you offload your mobile photos and videos to the Kwilt device, they are copied to the USB storage connected to your device, right in the privacy of your home. You remain in total control of your memories at all times!
In theory you could use up to a 16Tb hard drive but in practice up to a 6TB hard drive has been tried & tested.
Is it possible to plug a 4 port USB hub into a kwilt mini shoebox so I can connect 4 hard drives?
The Shoebox mini can accommodate a USB hub connection, however if a hub is connected, the Mini can accommodate only one large hard drive and one USB key, anything more than that & you will need either a powered USB hub or a self-powered USB HD Drive.
